    Make allotments, not supermarkets

The idea behind my poster is a tactical masterplan for converting a well-known patch of grass in South Bristol into lovely new allotments. If well-managed, there is every chance that a young, fresh crop of players can grow next season.

Simplified clock face features provide the basic elements from which this typeface is made. The letter forms spell out a quote that I like, about ‘wasted time’. It is a reminder that we should enjoy taking a break sometimes! I believe in clear, considered and interesting communication and enjoy producing work across a wide spectrum of disciplines, including editorial, information graphics and web.

    Surf

Sometimes i have to search the deepest areas of my brain when finding a suitable solution to a brief, and sometimes it just happens. This project just materialised on its own. I had been playing around with geometric shapes and blocks for a while, but i didn't know what to make out of it all. Then the 'Spare Time' project came along, and i thought " i know, i'll make a computer!" then all i had to do was come up with a snappy slogan. (which was the word surf, as this is what i do in my spare time) The result is quite simple and easy to digest, with a pleasant aesthetic.

    100 seagulls

The name of my poster "100seagulls" is taken from the Spanish song, "cien gaviotas" that I used to listen a lot one summer when i wasted a lot my time... I have tried to evoke that nostalgic feeling typical of rainy Sundays.

I wanted to create a design using clean, simple, graphical vector shapes which felt contemporary and worked overall as an image to draw your interest in. Then when you looked closer you would discover more detail. It's a direct representation of how I like to spend my own spare time, with references to places, films, family and friends. Even though the poster is about me, my hope is that my design is open to interpretation and that the viewer can make their own story up. I just hope that people like it and think it's pretty enough to put on their wall.

    Never nearer to Heaven...

The poster by Genevieve Browne was designed with the thought in mind of how I would most like to spend my spare time. My late Father once said that "never nearer to Heaven than standing at the top of an Alpine ski run". I can see him now, leaning on his ski poles in his retro red salopettes at the top of Mont Blanc.

Quantum entanglement: the absence of (spare) time

In physics ‘time’ is defined as a dimension that enables two otherwise identical events that occur at the same point in space to be distinguished (relating to the concept of space-time). The interval between two such events forms the basis of time measurement. ‘Space-time’ refers to geometry that includes the three space dimensions and a fourth dimension of time. In Newtonian physics, space and time are considered as separate entities, while in Einstein’s concept of the physical universe, space and time are regarded as entwined.

In theoretical physics, one particular concept called ‘quantum entanglement’ addresses the events occurring in a continuum and ultimately attempts to replicate an action or transfer of a particle instantaneously, thereby eliminating ‘travel’ time. This artwork is inspired by the concept of entanglement, as a mean of quantum communication to achieve ‘perfect transfer’ of information, i.e. simultaneous (or ‘time-independent’) transmission and reception.

    Spare Time in Shibuya

I wanted to do an image which was based on my time spent in Japan. The Japanese text at the top of the poster reads: 'Spare Time in Shibuya'. Shibuya is a popular area in Tokyo where a lot of young people hang out in the streets and go shopping in hi-tec stores. Further out there is a shadier area which has many small bars, love hotels, head shops, and the famous nightclub 'Womb'. The characters' fasions in this picture are based on my memories of the people I saw in Shibuya between 2004 and 2006 and are meant to reflect some of the aspects of Shibuya's lively night life.
